The Faculty of Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, participated in an international PBL program, hosting 15 students from Tatung University in Taiwan for seven days from August 27th to September 2nd. Our 15 participating students underwent five training sessions from May to August to improve their language skills and enhance their research abilities to ensure the program's success.
The primary goal of this PBL program was to divide students into five teams, each working on experiments related to one of the five designated themes, presenting their findings in English. Additionally, a common theme was the construction and evaluation of a spectrophotometer. The teams were organized into five groups, with three students from our university and three from Tatung University in each group.
Each group's theme was defined by our university faculty, and the students from our university took the initiative and worked diligently to conduct experiments according to their assigned themes. The themes included: Group 1 - " Analysis of a plasmid DNA pGEX using restriction enzyme," Group 2 - " Why does mixing wheat flour, salt, and water create Japanese noodles “UDON”?" Group 3 - " Bioseparation," Group 4 - " Measurement of hydraulic permeability (LP) (filtration coefficient) of dialyzer," and Group 5 - " Biochemical Properties of Protein," Additionally, there was a common theme: " Fabrication of photometer " After analyzing the experimental results, each group conducted a five-minute presentation in English on the final day, using PowerPoint.
The evaluation results varied slightly among groups due to the different themes, but each group reached the level that our university's faculty had anticipated. After the program concluded, certificates of completion were awarded to the participating students from Tatung University.
This program had the same participating members as the international PBL program at Tatung University held from August 6th to 12th. It was impressive to see that the students, who had met once before, had a strong sense of camaraderie and worked together effectively. We hope that this experience will enhance their international awareness and further enrich their student life in the future.
Finally, we express our sincere gratitude for the support from the Sakura Science Program. Through this program, academic exchange between Tatung University and Osaka Institute of Technology is expected to continue to develop, and it provided valuable learning opportunities for the students.
